Hi my name is Deborah Barrett and I am an art teacher.
I have taught at tertiary and secondary level and more recently spent many happy and productive years in primary schools where I believe the foundation to good art practice is laid. In these lessons students from Kindergarten to Year 6, and possibly on, will be exposed to a variety of media, are taught to look at what artists are doing, can bring concepts into their art making and must be prompted to push the boundaries by the teacher. I travel overseas often and see myself as a 'cultural tourist', interested in the art, lifestyle and geography of the people and places I visit. I am keen to share these experiences with my students to bring the world into the classroom. I also strive to work at my own art practice fulfilling the need to 'make' things. I work in sculpture using mixed media and as I believe that an artist helps to interpret the world for their audience I feel I must experience what I ask my students to do. I hope these art lessons inspire you too. |
